STEM & Matmidim Programs

STEM PROGRAM 

The KYHS STEM Research Initiative is designed to spur student interest in science, technology,
engineering and mathematical research while equipping students with the skill set to engage in bona fide academic research.

 

Ninth and tenth graders will have the option to take part in a STEM club where they will be introduced to essential research skills and practices. Eleventh and twelfth graders are then expected to progress from learning those skills to engaging in independent research, first at Kohelet and then during summer breaks in university settings.

 

Students participating in the STEM program will have the opportunity to earn incentives as they progress through the program.

 

TIER 1
Students who participate in an individual or group research project supervised by the KYHS STEM faculty that involves the design and implementation of a unique experiment, subsequent
analysis of the collected data, and public presentation of their work
OR
Students who choose a topic of interest, research it in the primary literature, and, under the supervision of the KYHS STEM faculty, write a formal literature review on that topic will earn a will earn:
 
  • a $1000 tuition credit toward the following year’s tuition
  • a $100 gift card to the Dairy cafe.
 
TIER 2

Students who participate in a rigorous summer program at an accredited school or university lasting a minimum of three weeks
OR
Students who participate in summer research in a university setting for a minimum of three weeks will earn:

 

  • a $5,000 tuition credit toward the following year’s tuition.
  • a $200 summer stipend for living expenses.

 

Students will be expected to produce a formal scientific paper, presentation, or poster describing the research they did or research skills they learned over the course of the summer. This formal demonstration of what they accomplished will be due to the STEM coordinator no later than the week we return to school from Sukkot break. Subsequently, a research colloquium will be held during the fall semester, at which all tier 3 incentive recipients will be expected to present.

 

All summer programs and research arrangements must be approved by the KYHS Science Department Chair prior to a student’s enrollment (and no later than Memorial Day) in order to qualify for the incentive.

 

TIER 3
Students who submit a project to and advance beyond the first round in a major national science competition (such as: Intel, ExploraVision, Regeneron, Siemens, BioGENEius Challenge, Google science fair, Breakthrough Junior Challenge, or the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium) program will earn:

 

  • a $5,000 tuition credit toward the following year’s tuition, if they are not yet in 12th grade.
  • a $1,000 cash award upon graduation from KYHS.
  • a $10,000 college scholarship should they place amongst the top twenty entrants in the contest.
 
All competitions must be officially approved by the KYHS Science Department Chair prior to submission in order to qualify for incentives.

 

TIER 4
Students who submit a project to and place within the top ten of a major national science competition will earn:
 
  • a $5,000 tuition credit toward the following year’s tuition, if they are not yet in 12th grade.
  • a $2,000 cash award upon graduation from KYHS.
  • a $20,000 college scholarship.
ZUCKERMAN MATMIDIM PROGRAM
 
Kohelet Yeshiva High School’s Zuckerman Matmidim program is designed to foster and enhance a culture of serious student Torah learning beyond the classroom walls. Through a tiered approach to both its requirements and its incentives, it aims to reach students at all levels and provide continuous motivation for further growth and higher achievement in Talmud Torah throughout their high school career. 
 
TIER 1
KYHS students who take either an exam offered as part of Yeshiva University’s Bronka Weintraub High School Bekiut Program or a Chidon HaTanach qualifying exam and score higher than 75% will receive a $25 gift certificate to the Dairy. Multiple gift certificates will be provided for multiple tests successfully passed.
ADDITIONAL INCENTIVE: Yeshiva University provides $25 worth of seforim to each student who scores over 75% on their Daf-A-Week exam and $20 worth of seforim to each student who scores over a 75 on their Amud-A-Week program.
 
TIER 2
KYHS students who, over the course of the summer, learn ten daf Gemara of a mesechta chosen by the Kohelet administration or learn a sefer of Tanach selected by the Kohelet administration and score 75% or higher on a KYHS comprehensive exam will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Dairy as well as a $1000 credit toward tuition. Tuition credits will be applied to one’s tuition obligation after financial aid has been awarded. 
 
TIER 3
KYHS students who complete all five exams offered in a given academic year as part of Yeshiva University’s Bronka Weintraub High School Bekiut Program with an average score of 75% or higher OR students who complete all of the qualifying exams for Chidon HaTanach and receive an invitation to the National Finals in New York City will receive a $5,000 tuition credit for the following school year. Students who complete all five amud-a-week exams offered as part of the Bekiut program will receive a $2,500 tuition credit for the following school year. Tuition credits will be applied to one’s tuition obligation after financial aid has been awarded and in addition to any gift certificates for which a student qualifies through Tier 1. 
 
TIER 4
KYHS students who devote a summer to Torah learning by attending a pre-approved learning program will receive $200 in spending money prior to the summer and a $5,000 credit toward tuition for the following academic year. Tuition credits will be applied to one’s tuition obligation after financial aid has been awarded. 
 
TIER 5
KYHS students who place in the top three cumulative scores of Yeshiva University’s Bronka Weintraub High School Bekiut Daf-A-Week Program, or students who place in the top five of the Chidon HaTanach national finals will receive a $10,000 graduation award toward Israel yeshiva or seminary and $1,000 graduation award for spending money in Israel. Students who place in the top three cumulative scores of Yeshiva University’s Amud-A-Week Program, will receive a $5,000 award toward Israel yeshiva or seminary and $500 graduation award for spending money in Israel.
 
ADDITIONAL INCENTIVE: Yeshiva University provides Grand Prizes of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000 for the top three cumulative scores on its Daf-A-Week exam and Grand Prizes of $1,500, $1,000, and $500 for the top three cumulative scores on its Amud-A-Week program. Chidon HaTanach provides a free trip to Israel for the winner of its National Chidon HaTanach.
