In Kohelet Yeshiva Middle School, the STEAM model integrates science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. During Skills and Seminar students master skills related to math. During Project Block they apply those skills to essential questions that draw on specific content areas within STEAM. These driving questions and specific content areas rotate on a 3 year cycle so that the entire Middle School is exploring the same areas each year. Nonetheless, the learning experience is personalized for each student with regard to the particular skills on which the teachers choose to focus, choice regarding research topics, and the modality of sharing one’s work, as well the choice of materials used during the research process.
Skills are the focus of our curriculum, even while learning specific content. Skills related to the learning of research, communication, science, technology, engineering, art and math, etc., are Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) aligned and personalized to each child through the Alt School Milestones provided on the platform.
